The Regional Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) for the West and Central Africa, Dr. Djibril Diallo has visited Liberia from 25th-28thJuly 2016. Dr. Diallo will meet with Her Excellency the President of the Republic of Liberia and Chairperson of ECOWAS, Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and with other key actors of the HIV response in the country. He briefed them on the implications of the newly adopted political declaration on HIV and AIDS and presented to them the emergency plan for the West and Central Africa region, which is being developed by UNAIDS. According to a press release, Dr Djibril Diallo who also conveyed a special message from the UNAIDS Executive Director, attended a Ministerial conference on post Ebola health reforms during his stay in Monrovia.
During his four day mission in Monrovia, Dr. Diallo had meetings with the following ministries: Ministry of Health; Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection; Ministry of Foreign Affairs; National AIDS Commission and the Association of People Living with HIV and AIDS. He also met members of the UN Family including the Special Representative of the Secretary General Mr. Farid Zarif and the UN Resident Coordinator. Dr. Djribil Diallo has over 30 years experience in international relations and diplomacy. He spearheaded initiatives for global advocacy of HIV and AIDS. Dr. Diallo helped to advance the corporate policy on shared responsibility and global solidarity, UNAIDS’ vision of Getting to Zero, and worked closely with senior management to provide support in political mobilization of prominent personalities, political leaders, civil society organizations, and the media. He led the innovative “Protect the Goal” campaign to promote AIDS awareness and prevention around major sporting tournaments. As Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the African Renaissance and Diaspora Network, and Deputy Executive Director of the Global Alliance of Mayors and Leaders from Africa and of African Descent, Dr. Diallo has mobilized support to advance UNAIDS’ Fast-Track Cities initiative with mayors of African descent. Prior to joining UNAIDS, Dr. Diallo served as the Director of the United Nations New York Office of Sports for Development and Peace from 2004 to 2008; Director of the Communications Office of the Administrator of UNDP from 1995 to 2005; and Special Adviser to UNICEF’s Executive Director for nine years. A citizen of Senegal, Dr. Diallo earned a Ph.D. in Linguistics and Communications from the University of London. His work for peace and sustainable growth and development has been recognized by numerous national and international organizations.
